Water Heater Leak & Water Damage

A leaking water heater can release water slowly or very quickly, depending on the failure. If you can safely do so, stop the water source and keep clear of electrical or gas hazards associated with the equipment.

After the leak is stopped

Remove standing water, check nearby flooring and walls, and look for water that may have traveled into adjacent rooms. Significant standing water may require water extraction.

Dry the surrounding materials

Drying is especially important where water has reached drywall, baseboards, cabinets or flooring. See structural drying and dehumidification.
